Program Definition & Purpose
By definition, community service (CS) refers to a non-paying job undertaken by an individual or a group of people to benefit the community or its institutions. Schools across the continents are incorporating CS programs into their curricula as part of their initiative to focus on core values and civic well-being. The aim of the program is to offer students various opportunities, either within the school environment or the local community, to engage in age-appropriate activities that serve individuals or the community at large on one or more levels, such as environmental, social, academic, etc.
Why Community Service?
At SAIS, a CS program is the ideal tool that translates the School’s vision and mission (Appendix A) into palpable learning opportunities that allow students to develop and further enhance a set of values and principles that form an integral part of their moral education. The program fosters collaboration among various constituents as they work together to benefit the community. Such real-life activities train students to become responsible, productive citizens with a clear sense of civic duty. Furthermore, by interacting with people from various socio-economic backgrounds, students learn to respect and accept others as well as tolerate differences. The table below depicts the correlation between the School’s Moral Education program and the CS program. The suggested activities serve as a demonstrative sample only and might be organized only after obtaining approval from the SEC.
